Last day of July and I nearly missed my monthly update. Well, I found out that
I actually have lot’s of visitors from all over the world including New
Zealand, Australia, U.K. Italy, France and even Saudi Arabia. I am so
impressed by this that I promised to make this website more interesting and
update it more frequently. For a homepage, the best I have come across is
this one here. It’s done by an Australian and it’s
pretty funny and informative. This guy doesn’t beat around the bush. He says
it as it is and he says what he thinks. I like people like that.
Here are 2 more funny sites.
FunnyFreePics - the name says it all, funny pictures
for free!
Priceless - this is actually a page from the Aussie
guy above, basically a parody of the Mastercard advertisement on T.V.
that list all the stuff you can buy with Mastercard with the last item
you cannot, hence priceless. Really funny stuff but be warned, there are
frontal nudity (male and female).
OK. One last link for everyone. This one is
more of an informative site. It’s about Easter Eggs. No, not the chocolate
types.
Easter Eggs are features or extra things hidden in
computer programs or anything at all. Check it out.

Got my bike fixed up on Monday and the total cost including the lorry to pick
it up and a new rear tire was about MYR 400. It was less than I had expected.
I guess I was lucky. The bike is running fine now. In fact, I managed to hit
149 km/hr yesterday.
Sunday, 24 June 2001
I had a small accident while I was on my
Suzuki FXR150 motorcycle last
Friday night. I was on my way to
Genting Highlands and was almost
to the top when I slipped and fell. I wasn’t
going very fast but I was trying to overtake an ambulance going uphill at a
corner on wet roads. The fall itself is minor but for some reason, the damaged
on the bike was severe. The front brakes level on the right handle was broken.
The rear brakes paddle on the right leg was also broken. My right side mirror
was shattered and because of that, I was not able to turn left anymore as the
mirror is now in the way of the handle. I was not injured except for some
slight bruises. My pants and shirt was not even torn and there was no bleeding
except from the bruising. I was less than 2 km to Genting Highlands.
Lucky for me, I hit an
ambulance (the driver stopped and gave me a ride to the top).
Lucky for me, I was on the way up instead of on the way down.
Lucky for me, it wasn’t
dark yet (7pm).
Lucky for me, there was no car behind me.
Lucky for me, I wasn’t carrying anyone behind me.
Stupid of me, not to change the rear tire when it was due to be changed (I was
planning to change it next week).
Stupid of me, to push the bike so hard.
Stupid of me, to think that it was safe to go up to Genting Highlands when the
road is wet.
Genting Highlands is an excellent resort. The
journey up is very challenging. The roads are winding and steep. Some corners
are very sharp. Sometimes, I have to put on 2nd gear due to sharp corners and
steep roads. It is indeed an excellent challenge of skill and machine. But it
is also very dangerous especially for motorcycles. I caution anyone who
attempts to ride a bike up to Genting Highlands. I have tried and fail. It was
not as easy as I thought. Be very careful and don’t push your luck.
Getting my bike down was a huge problem. I
needed a lorry or a truck and I don’t know of anyone who has one. The
motorcycle shop told me that it would cost between MYR 150 - 200 for the
transport due to the distance from town. A friend of mine finally found a
lorry for me and I spend the whole of yesterday waiting, driving and
retrieving my bike from Genting Highlands. In the end, it only cost me MYR 90.
The motorcycle shop will order the parts in on Monday and it will take a few
days for them to fix it up. I estimate this to cost about MYR 250 - 300. I
have also asked them to change my rear tire for me at MYR 140. This little
mistake will cost me possibly more than MYR 500. I am now immobilize and don’t
even know when I’ll get my bike back and how much it would cost to repair it.
But this accident has taught me a very valuable lesson and that is,
“Don’t take unnecessary risk when traveling long distance”.
The cost of bringing the bike back to town is too expensive, troublesome and
not worth the risk. Hopefully, all these lessons that I have learned will help
me to be more careful in the future when I owned my
Hayabusa.

Opps! Looks like I missed an update on May. My apologies but I guess I was
kind of distracted by some personal problems. Well, now the problem is sort of
over and all I am left with is financial problem. With my life insurance and
my MCSE course due, I was not in a good financial position. Fortunately, I
have some very good friends who were there to lend me a hand. Francis, Victor
and Kong Leong; thanks guys for being there for me. I will not forget this.
Don’t
worry, I have a very good credit rating. I always repay my loan. In fact I
have already arranged payment thru a friend in case of anything happens to me.
I really need to concentrate
on my MCSE course so I can get certified ASAP. This will hopefully help me
establish some creditability in my profession as a Network Engineer.
Oh yeah! I bought a TV Tuner card with FM
Radio called
LiveView FlyVideo '98 FM for my PC. This Taiwan-made
PCI card is not bad at all and I manage to get it 2nd hand from
Lelong.com.my
for merely MYR 140. Now I can listen to the
FM Radio while I am at the computer. The quality is surprisingly quite good.
Unfortunately, because I don’t
have an external antenna, the TV reception is rather bad due to the
interference from the computer itself.

Another month has passed and I have friends that complained that this site is
not updated as frequently as it should. Well, here it is. What has happened in
the last month? Plenty. First, I enrolled myself to Microsoft Certified System
Engineers (MCSE) with one of Microsoft Authorized Training Center. This course
runs for 3 months and consists of 7 modules. It also comes with a free Cisco
Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. CCNA consists of 2 modules.
I have since attended 2 modules of the MCSE. This course is not easy. Although
the questions are in the form of multiple choices but the questions are very
tricky. I hope to be able to get both the MCSE and CCNA certification so I
could get a better job with a better pay. MCSE basically certifies you to be a
Windows 2000 expert. With Windows XP coming out soon, I don’t
know how long this certification can last me before I have to upgrade again.
This course is costing me a bundle and I hope it would be worth my time, money
and effort.
I have also been quite
active surfing this local auction site called
Lelong.com.my.
You can find almost anything in there from houses to Pokemon cards. I am a
verified member since last year. It is a very good place to sell off your old
junk and get a very good bargain. In fact, I managed to get a very very good
deal on my motorcycle. I think I saved myself about MYR 1,500.
Another site, or program
that has intrigued me lately is
ICQ. ICQ ver icq2000b has the ability to
SMS a mobile phone anywhere in the world. I find this to be most useful and
also the cheapest way to communicate via SMS. Unfortunately, in Malaysia, it
only works with Maxis even though it claims to be able to work with TmTouch
and TimeCel. I even managed to SMS my malaysian friend who was in Bangkok at
the time. He even replied the SMS and it came back to my ICQ in less than 1
minute. I am using Maxis, so if you ever need to SMS me, and you don’t
have a mobile phone or not using Maxis, ICQ is the best option. So far, I have
tested it and it works with Singapore’s
SingTel and MobileOne. And it’s all free except for your internet connection.
The sad situation here
in Malaysia is that you cannot SMS a different mobile company, ie. if you are
with Maxis, you can’t
SMS TmTouch and vice versa. Well, with the help from
BlueHyppo you can use one of their
partners to do an indirect SMS across a different mobile company. The catch is
that you have to pay for it. You can sign up and get your first 10 SMS for
free. After that, you have to buy either a 100 SMS package or a 150 SMS
package.

Time to update my site again. Sorry for the long break. Well, not much has
happened since. I replace my link to
3dfx with
nVidia in my
Favorite Computer
Sites.
I have also added a new link to
MadOnion.com. The new
3DMark2001
is available for download but you’ll also need
DirectX 8.0
to be able to run it.
Unfortunately, if you would like to run all the benchmark, you would also need
a
GeForce3
which is currently not available yet.

Finally got myself into the mobile phone network 2 days ago. 5 years late but
better late than ever. I am now contactable around Peninsula Malaysia only. I
am using Maxis Hotlink and Maxis does not currently cover East Malaysia. For
those of you who are not in Malaysia, Hotlink is a prepaid service. That also
means it does not support roaming hence my phone number is completely useless
outside Peninsula Malaysia. My number is 60-12-###9855. Those who wants to buy
4-Ekor may do so but don’t
forget me when you strike 1st prize.
E-Mail me
if you want to know the actual number.
I’ve also started on my new job this month. It’s with
another IT firm. It’s called
All-Media Technology Integration.
We deals in hardware, software, technical support and project management. I
will be more on the hardware networking side. At the moment, I will be
concentrated on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switches. These are 622Mb/s
switches. This is about 11,100 times the speed of your normal 56kb/s Modem.
But the speed is for internal connectivity only. Where I am working now is
also where my brother currently works. But he is technically in a different
company although we share the same office. For that reason, I have to give up
my name
“Lai” (since my brother is
currently known as
“Lai”) that I have been
using for the last 5 years and go back to the name I was known back in
Australia,
“Yok”.
Sunday, 7 January 2001
I bought a new PC 2 weeks ago. I decided to go for the AMD Duron this time. So
my brother bought the Celeron from me and I had to get my own motherboard,
CPU, casing and monitor. Since I was a little low on cash, I only gotten
myself a Samsung 15”
monitor. The new specs of my PC is at the
bottom of this page.
Tuesday, 5 December 2000
My apologies for not updating this site for so long. Kinda busy with my new
job and new PC. Trying to get the hang of Windows 2000. Firstly, new changes
to this humble site is the resizable ability. If you are using resolution of
1024x768 (IE), default font and default size, you should be seeing the left
panel without any scrollbars. If you are using a lower resolution, the Menu on
the left is too long and you would have a scrollbar. The
“HiFever’s
Inferno”
sign would also sometimes be too long and you can’t
see the whole sign. To counter that, you now have the ability to pull the
divider between the panel and enlarge the left panel.
I have also amended the
Favorite Computer
Sites. New entries includes
Ace's Hardware,
[H]ardOCP and
Tweak3D. I have also changed the link on
Reverend's the pulpit to his new site
Reverend's 3DPulpit.
iXBT Hardware has also changed their site address and name to
x-bit labs. I removed
S3
as they no longer have any product to sell.
I have also changed all the links to the color green so that it would be
easier on the eyes (since the background is black).
Other little things includes selling my fantastic Celeron 566Mhz @ 867Mhz and
buying a Celeron 600Mhz. I found out later that the Celeron 600Mhz could only
get to 800Mhz :-( and not 900Mhz as I had hoped. So I sold that too and got
another Celeron 566Mhz hoping that it would get to 850Mhz. Unfortunately, it
didn’t so now I am stuck with a Celeron 566Mhz
overclocked to only 757Mhz! Good thing I bought myself a
GeForce2 MX so now it is running faster than ever before. I
have also installed Windows Me and DirectX 8.0.
Sunday, 8 October 2000
Change the
Overclockin link to
PC Scoop since they have merged. You can
find the updated links in my
Favorite Computer
Sites. Also, I have stated working in this
computer firm called
Keray IT. We sell proxy servers, e-mail servers, fax servers,
virus scanners and even web-hosting. Basically we handle all your Internet
needs. I have also managed to overclock my Celeron
566MHz (66 x 8.5) to a staggering
908MHz (107x8.5)! A little unexpected but
a pleasant surprise. However it is only totally and completely stable at
867MHz (102x8.5). In order to get to
908Mhz, I had to increase the Core Voltage from 1.50V to 1.65V. To get to
867Mhz however, I only have to increase it to 1.60V. And the big bonus is that
all this was achieved using Intel’s
default heatsink and fan that came with the Celeron. If I had a better
heatsink like the Golden Orb, I am quite certain that it would run at a stable
885MHz
(104x8.5).

Changed this site to be a 2 panel frame instead of 3. The top frame has been
removed so that there would be more reading space on the right panel or the
main.htm. I have also made the background fire to be a watermark
meaning that when you scroll down, the background will not move with the
scrolling. I have also removed the borders separating the frames.

Got myself a pair of
Hostnet NIC (Network Interface Card) and managed to do a peer-to-peer
connection between my new Celeron 566 and my old Cyrix 133. Transfer rate is
slightly more than 1MB per second.
Sunday, 3 September 2000
Added a new photo of my ex-classmate
Gary Khor in my
BB 88 - How are they now? He is currently back to Malaysia
after 10 years in Calgary, Canada. Welcome back Gary. Hope you can adjust your
life back into this Developing Country.
Thursday 31 August 2000
My sale of my
Altec Lansing ACS54 was a no-deal so I
managed to get them back today thru my ex-colleague Jenny who was kind enough
to bring them back all the way from Labuan.
Friday, 1 September 2000
Added a new
Homepages Links of my friend
Harry Sim.
He has a page for Labuan, a place I used to work for nearly 5 years. Check it
out.
Saturday, 26 August 2000
Took off the link for

Got your attention yet? Well, here is a really good link,
FHM 100 Sex Tricks, I added it today under

blow your relationship away like Bill Clinton or Hugh Grant. Get some
tips on many other techniques and positions.
SKYDIVING
I went skydiving today. Did it under
Wilayah Sports Parachuting Club. It all started when I saw this little article
in The Star. So I asked my brother to enquire about it. He
called, he e-mailed, he got all the info. So finally the date was set. The
required training would be on 29 July 2000 at the Jumpmaster’s house in Cheras
Indah. We were told that it would last 6 hours. Luckily for us, it only lasted
3½ hours. This includes the theory of flight and the aerodynamics of a
parachute. This was very interesting because I always thought that a parachute
falls down and only moves when there was wind. Wrong. It is constantly moving
forward like a hand-glider and very maneuverable. The constant forward
movement actually provide Lift, thereby sustaining the airtime of the
jump and slowing down the rate of descend. It is therefore very safe. But why
would anyone jump out of a perfectly good airplane during flight? Well, the
door is open and that is reason enough! The Jumpmaster is actually quite good.
A Malay chap who was the first civilian in Malaysia to do a skydive in 1979
and has done over 1,400 jumps. We (my brother, his friend and yours truly) met
at his place with about 9 others including 3 English girls and 1 tudung
girl. After the theory of flights, we moved on to the jump itself. Position,
technique, what to do, what not to do and so fort. Following that was the most
important module, Emergency. This covers all the possible malfunction
and problems that we may encounter and how to counter them. He said that we
most likely will not be faced with any of the problem but we need to know what
to do in case it happens. He claims that all his 500 plus students’ parachutes
opened and none has ever needed to use the reserve chute.
Then this morning, Sunday 30 July 2000, we met
at the TUDM (Royal Malaysian Air Force) airport in Sungai Besi. That’s the old
old airport (and the only true KL airport that is actually in KL) before KLIA
and before Subang. Since this is a military area, security is a little tight.
We were not allowed to bring any cameras. So unfortunately, I didn’t managed
to get any photographs this time. But I can promise you I will get some next
time (YES, there will be a next time). What we did was a Static Jump.
This is where your cord is attached to the plane and as you jump off from the
plane, the chute will open in 3 seconds. We jumped from a height of about
3,500 feet. The size of the chute is 290 square feet and it takes about 5 to 7
minutes to reach the ground. A freefall would fall at about 120 mph or 200 kph.
That is about 1,000 feet in every 6 seconds. After the chute opened, it was
exhilaration all the way down. Gliding and falling to wherever I choose. It’s
a very unique feeling, kinda hard to explain so you gotta try it out yourself
to experience it. We can only do a freefall after we prove ourselves capable
of controlling our exit from the plane. This usually takes about 5 static
jumps. All in all, a very good jump for me and an experience I will never
forget. This is more thrilling than Bungee Jumping or SCUBA Diving. It’s not
as scary or crazy as it looks. The cost for newcomers like myself is MYR 550.
Subsequent jumps will cost MYR 150. I am trying to gather more friends to try
this, as this is a group sport. It is more fun if you can share your
experience in a large group of friends so if any of you would like to try this
exhilarating sport,
let me know. It’s better than sex! At the least, you don’t need to
call your partner the next day.

37th Annual Campfire for 5th PJ Troop of Bukit Bintang
Boys Secondary School. That’s my old high school. The last time I went for a
Campfire was 5 years ago right before I left for Labuan. I was first greeted
at the reception near the Squash Court entrance. I was also presented with the
program booklet for the evening. This is a high quality magazine-like booklet
with glossy covers, fancy fonts and color pictures on the inside. WOW! To
think we only hand-written them then photocopy our booklets and staple them
together back in 1987. Then there was the 100 meters long man-made bridge made
out of thin tree trunks that takes the guest to the Campfire site near the
tennis court and volleyball court. My estimate is that there are probably more
than 100 pieces of them and they are about 12 feet long. OK, this was a good
display of scouting activities and skills. But then, I found out later that
they actually bought the trunks and had it delivered! Talk about being in the
new Millennium.
Well, the biggest surprise
was yet to come. This time I was totally flabbergasted. Scouts’ Campfires have
gone multi-media. I am talking about 9 TVs stacked up 3x3 to give one giant TV
screen. This TV is then hooked up to a Sony low-lux camcorder. A cameraman
then shoots all 600-700 guests from other troops and put it on the big screen
live like in a Rock Concert or a Sport Stadium. Pretty impressive but
that’s not all. They had a drum set and 2 electric guitars on the stage.
Then comes the lighting of
the Campfire. Well, I guess some things never change. They used the same
technique that was used back in 1987 when the first Campfire was held at the
playfields rather than in the assembly hall. Same ‘hang the fire from the top
of the hill and let it slide to the Campfire’ routine. I mean, why mess with
perfection rite? What was new was the “domino” effect they used on the fire to
light up a circle on the ground of the tennis court, then proceeding to a
tripod and finally lighting up the Roman Numeral ‘V’ or 5 on the tripod. This
year, the bonfire is a small one, only about 1 meter in height. I guess with
the multiple spotlight that was all over the place, there is no need for a big
bonfire. Besides, this would make it difficult to watch the giant TV rite?
After the bonfire was lithe,
on with the multi-media show. This consisted of an AVI video format running on
Windows98. It has clips of many movies that are well stitched together like it
was an official opening of a new Stock Exchange. This clip runs for about 1
minute. With the introduction video, the 37th Annual Campfire is
officially launched. After the clip, there was another video clip showing all
the committee for the Campfire including pictures, names and ranks. Sort of
like the credits you see at the end of the Academy Awards, we would like to
thank so-and-so, blah, blah, blah…This was also an AVI video format running on
Windows98.
OK, so the bonfire is lithe.
The tradition is to sing a couple of songs rite? The first song is not
usually but always “Our Campfire Is Kindled”. Of course this would
be the first song in an ordinary Campfire or if it had been held 5 years ago.
But in this 37th Annual Campfire, they sang, get this “Hotel
California”! No kidding. 1 drummer, 2 guitarist and a vocalist sang the
Eagles’ classic to the enjoyment of the crowds (most whom were not even born
when the Eagles release this single), especially the girl guides who cheered
like they were in a Rock Concert. Not forgetting the cameraman who covers the
band and broadcasts it live on the giant TV. I was waiting for the
crowd to light up their cigarettes-lighters and start waving side-to-side. I
kept asking myself, is this a Campfire or a Rock Concert? Call me old-fashion
but I think this was way overboard. Who ever suggested this should be
punished with running laps on the field. But I am afraid such punishment these
days would probably be done using a golf buggy.
As for drinks, I remember we
used to mixed some water-down F&N orange cordial with big pieces of ice. These
days, they serve A&W Root Beer! My goodness! What’s for next year? Carlsberg?
And the year after that? Hennessey XO? And the year after that? Louis XIII?
Whatever happened to Scout’s Law No. 9.
All I can say about this
year’s Campfire is that although it was very high-tech, the original theme of
a Campfire is somewhat lost in the multi-media and the Rock Concert style
performance. Kinda sad really.

Got back from Singapore yesterday. Visited a few friends and ex-colleagues
while I was there. I took a few pictures of them too and has added them to the
photos page. Among them was
Amir &

James,
Pang Meng
Yam,
Janet & Tan
Yin Leng and
Koh Tien Wah, all whom are from Bayerische Landesbank Singapore
Branch. I stayed with my high school friend,

Flew back from
Labuan to Kuala Lumpur on the 7pm flight. Managed to sell off “Cup-chai”
Honda C70 Deluxe at a cut-throat (my throat) price of MYR 1,500 only. I bought
it for MYR 3,650 on March 1997. The retail price for a brand new one is at MYR
4,000. My initial asking price was for MYR 2,500. No takers so I lowered it to
MYR 2,000. Still no takers so I had no choice but to bring it to the bike
dealer
“Ah Meng” opposite
Kings Karaoke and managed to get only MYR 1,500. My bike has only done 10,000
km. I saw another C70 for sale that has done about 71,000 km and the asking
price at his shop was at MYR 3,000. Looks like all Labuan consumers are too
stupid to take advantage of a good deal. My plate number was
“LA 6567”. If any of
you happens to stop by at his shop, please take a minute to find my bike and
inform me
of the asking price. I want to know how much profit this fellow is making out
of my desperation. I also managed to sell off my Voodoo2 3D card for only MYR
200. Now all I have left of my computer is my 20.5 GB hard disk and my SB
Live! Value.
My father was here for a last
minute holiday so I was able to use his luggage allowance to bring over all my
stuff I accumulated though out the 4 years 9 months I was in Labuan. I checked
in 1 big box, 2 big bags and 1 small bag. We both hand-carried 1 big bag and 1
small bag each.
Tuesday, 27 June 2000
Managed to sell off my PC to a friend in Labuan.
Also sold my Altec Lansing Speakers. Now all I got is my 20.5 GB hard disk,
Voodoo2 and my SB Live! Value. I have to get rid of as much fixed assets as
possible before returning back to Kuala Lumpur. With no PC, my web-page
updating would be slow down quite substantially. Wait till I get another PC.
Sunday, 18 June 2000
By popular demand, I
have changed some of the background of pages with a lot of text to just plain
black. This way, it would be easier to read the text. I have also put all the
links to a separate page. This way, those who want to read the
“What’s new?”
page would be able to load this page much faster.
Saturday, 17 June 2000
The biggest
development in my site so far; this site is now a framing page. The menu will
now be on the left-hand side of the page at all times. Please note that this
site was designed for 1024 x 768 resolution. If you are using a 17”
monitor, I recommend that you switch to 1024 x
768. If you are using a monitor smaller than a 17”, it’s time to
upgrade. To retain the original format of this page and reduce any cluttering
of the page, I have changed the Tripod advertisement to be a
“pop-up”
type . I have also moved all my pages and pictures from my 2 other sites,
Fortune City and
XOOM back to
Tripod since Tripod now offers 50MB space
for homepages. Also added a new link at
Favorite Computer
Sites called
AMD Zone. It’s a site devoted to new
developments with AMD products.
Wednesday, 14 June 2000
Added a new link at
Jobs Links called
Hiretech. It’s a job-hunting site for IT
workers.
Monday, 12 June 2000
I have enabled hyperlink rollover effect on all
pages of this web site. This means that all hyperlinks will turn to
Red when you put your mouse on top of it. This
has only been tested with IE 5.0 and currently does not work with Netscape. I
have also modified all the hyperlinks by removing all the irritating lines
beneath them. To distinguish them from normal text, all hyperlinks are now
Blue in color and will turn to
Red when you put your mouse on top of it.
Thursday, 8 June 2000
Added 2 new links at
Jobs Links. They are
jobpilot and
JobDirect.
Wednesday, 7 June 2000
Added a new
Fun Links,
Dumb Laws. It shows all the dumb laws in US and around the
world. Take a look. It’s interesting and fun. Also added a new category of
links,
Jobs Links. It’s has a few links to popular
job finding web sites. I took off 2 links under
Real Audio Links because they no longer
exist.
Tuesday, 6 June 2000
Added 2 statistical counters on this page. You
can view them by clicking on them. They are the 2 icons above on the aqua
banner. They are from
WebTracker
and
NetStats.
My old counter of over 2000 hits was reset by Tripod.
Monday, 5 June 2000
Change some fonts on this page.
Sunday, 4 June 2000
Constructed this new format. Like it?
E-mail me
for comments. Btw, there are 2 Easter eggs on this web site. Try clicking on
some pictures to find them. Added
LAWA-SPCA
on the
Fun Links. It the Labuan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals and the site is currently maintained by
Noreen Wong.
Also added the new link to Mediaring. Not just any
Mediaring link. This one allows you to make calls to U.S.,
Canada and China for free. You can make these calls to normal phones. There is
no need for the other party to have a computer. Just sign-up if you are not
already a member. Have a mic hook onto your sound card and talk away.
Well, I tendered my
resignation on last Thursday to be effective at the end of June 2000. No
concrete plans at the moment. I guess this is the time to say,
“I’m keeping
my options open”. Traveling
is definitely in my plans but not sure to where and for how long. All depends
on the KLSE. If it goes up, I can go further and longer. If it doesn’t, well,
then I guess this honeymoon period (nothing to do with marriage) would be cut
short.
