Metropolitan Museum of Art & Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum |
|
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is another huge museum and you should try to spend the whole day there. It has 2 levels but the floor space is much bigger than the Museum of Modern Art. I walked for 2 hours at a fast pace and I didn’t manage to cover everything that was on display. If you like art, this is the place to go. Anything that constitute as art is being displayed here. There is the armory room where emblems on a shield, carving on samurai’s swords, carving on 18th century guns are all considered as art in their own right. There is the American furniture of the 18th and 19th century. Clocks from all over the world. Rooms taken right out of Rome with sculptured ceiling and walls. 2000 years old vase from China. Tombs from Egypt with mummies. As long as there is some kind of drawing, sculpture or artistic values, it would qualify to be in this museum. Of course there is the normal paintings as art. Literally thousands of painting, some as big as the wall itself. The museum however does not permit the use of the flash on a camera so my photos here are very few. The Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum is actually the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. Inside, there is a F-14 Tomcat and many other WWII aircrafts. On the top of the USS Intrepid, there is a A-12 Blackbird among other aircrafts. Part of the museum consist of a destroyer USS Edson and a submarine USS Growler. The Growler is one of the first 2 submarine to carry nuclear weapons on board. A 20 minutes tour is conducted to explain the function and lifestyle in a submarine. Although not as big as the other museums, I think it’s worth a visit.
