New York Stock Exchange (Wall Street) & Federal Hall |
|
New York Stock Exchange, no one can deny that it is the most important stock exchange in the world. As the saying goes, “The world puts its stock in us”. The tour is free but on the week before New Year, it was packed with people and I couldn’t get in. There is only a limited number of tourist that are allowed to enter NYSE per day. Since I couldn’t get it, I went next door to the Federal Hall instead. Federal Hall is located only a stone throw away from New York Stock Exchange. New York was the 1st capital of America, before Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. Where Federal Hall now stands was the old city hall. It has been re-done many times for the last 200 years. It was renamed Federal Hall and made a memorial of George Washington. There is a 20 minutes tour and a brief explanation of the history of this hall. There is not much to see here although the tour was quite educational. I managed to get in the NYSE on the next week. Again, the X-ray and metal detector drills applies here. While inside, no photos and video is allowed so I am not able to give you a view of what it looks like inside. There, you can see the actual trading floor in action. There is also a video explaining the function and mechanics of this exchange. The average deal takes about 26 seconds to conclude using the “Open Outcry” system. It’s a shame in my humble opinion that the most watched exchange is lagging behind the world in computerization of their system.
